August 31, 2023Fertility is one of those things that can easily slip away from us if we don’t take care of ourselves. Whether it’s due to age, stress or lifestyle choices, our fertility can be negatively impacted, making it harder for us to conceive. However, with the help of acupuncture, we can support our fertility and increase our chances of having a healthy pregnancy. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at how acupuncture can play a crucial role in supporting fertility at every age, from our 20s all the way through to our 40s.
In our 20s we’re at our most fertile but there are a myriad of valid reasons why we might not feel ready for parenthood. Many of us may not have found a partner that we would like to build a family with just yet so it’s essential to start getting into good habits that can support our fertility later on when we are truly ready. This means establishing a routine, including a healthy diet and moderate exercise, along with managing stress levels and practising safe sex. Avoiding smoking or vaping tobacco and cannabis, excessive drinking and recreational drug use is also important during this time when we can feel invincible with our health. Getting ahead of any health concerns that are coming up as soon as possible so that they don’t hinder our family goals is important too. Starting to work with an Acupuncturist to prepare the body and mind for your journey to motherhood about 6 months before you plan to conceive is a great way to make sure your health and wellness are optimal so that your pregnancy and baby will be healthy too.
As we move into our 30s, life gets busier as careers and family ties start to take centre stage. Stress and lifestyle management and a harmonious work/life balance become crucial factors in maintaining our fertility. Our digestive health needs attention as the nutrients we digest and absorb are the building blocks of life and acupuncture can help optimise digestive functions aiding our bodies in creating more vital energy we call Qi (responsible for all metabolic functions, movement and warmth) and the nutrient rich Blood (responsible for keeping our spirit or consciousness vibrant), both key to health conception and pregnancy. Finding time for self-care and real rest and sleep are also essential in preventing burnout, which can impact fertility negatively. Supporting a healthy menstrual cycle can be achieved by eating regular, nutrient dense meals. Your acupuncturist will have tons of life-hacks to try, like suggesting to always keep your abdomen covered and warm to boost fertility. Sorry y’all! Crop tops are out of style if you’re trying to conceive the Traditional Chinese Medicine way!
In our 40s, our bodies undergo significant changes, including a decrease in the genetic materials needed to have a healthy, robust menstrual cycle and ovulation. Our 40’s are a time when our fertility levels are on a natural decline and it’s essential to find ways of maintaining them if adding to your family is the big goal. There is a saying amongst acupuncturist’s which goes something like “If you have a period, you can get pregnant” Acupuncture can aid in preserving your precious genetic materials, hormones, Blood and Qi thereby supporting and improving our fertility. By supporting the body’s natural functions, acupuncture can boost viability in our remaining eggs, improving our chances of conception.
Acupuncture can address a wide range of fertility related concerns including endometriosis, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOR), infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, irregular menstrual cycles, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and much more. Acupuncture treatments involve inserting thin needles into specific points on the body, stimulating energy, and promoting optimal functioning of the body. This ancient, holistic approach can help balance the body’s hormonal and physiological processes, leading to improved fertility.
Regardless of age, acupuncture can support your journey to parenthood, helping you achieve your dreams of having a healthy pregnancy and baby (or 3!). Leave no stones unturned in this journey, include acupuncture, and get ready to grow your brood. I can’t wait to help you so do yourself a huge favour by booking your next, or very first, acupuncture visit with me today!
