Meet your host: Dr. Kody Au

Dr. Kody Au graduated from the University of Alberta in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. He worked at Burnaby Hospital on the Acute Medicine and Stroke ward shortly after graduating. In 2015, Dr. Kody Au obtained his Bachelor of Science in Human Biology, Masters of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences and a Doctor of Chiropractic graduating with Magna Cum Laude Honors from the University of Western States.

Kody is the Owner of Baseline Health and Wellness Inc. in Vancouver, BC and has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. He has a special interest in sports related injuries where he applies extensive assessment, traditional chiropractic therapy, and cutting edge rehabilitation techniques.


The course has really helped me when I was diagnosed with a lumbar disk derangement. There were days the pain was worse than others so the course allowed me to rehabilitate at my own pace. If I felt my back wasn’t ready to progress onto the next set of exercises I could just continue with the same or repeat a week. Course Matrix

1) Introduction (Outline)

Welcome to how to fix your own low back!

This course was designed with your condition in mind! In a six month period, five in ten Canadians will suffer from low back pain and up to 85% of working people will experience low back pain during their lifetime. More shockingly, low back pain in Canada costs the medical system between 6-12 billion dollars each year!

In this course you will go through a self-assessment using range of motion, neurological testing, orthopaedic testing and self palpation to find out some of the causes of your low back pain. After you find out the source of your pain, an explanation video will introduce you to your new found condition and then have a plan set out to help you manage and fix your low back pain!

3) Assessment

In this section, you will be completing your assessment and place your findings on the worksheets found in this section. The assessment portion consists of:

– Range of motion
– Neurological Testing
– Orthopaedic Testing
– Palpation

4) Range of Motion

In this section, you will be moving in 6 different motions:

– Flexion
– Extension
– Left Rotation
– Right Rotation
– Left Lateral Flexion
– Right Lateral Flexion


Stop if it becomes painful and do not push yourself past an uncomfortable position. Mark your findings onto the worksheet!

5) Neurological Testing

This section is to assess for if there are any nerve findings that come along with your low back pain. Numbness and tingling are scary symptoms for most people. They are uncomfortable and sometimes accompany pain. The reason that these symptoms are alarming are because it usually signifies that a nerve is being affected. This section is to see if there are any areas that are lacking feeling that you may not know about.

There are many reasons for numbness and tingling and it is strongly suggested that you see a medical provider (medical doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist, etc.) for more information about your numbness and tingling as further testing that is beyond this course should be performed.

6) Orthopaedic Testing

These collection of tests are designed to find what tissue is having the problem or “tissue issue”. These odd tests will often re-create your symptoms and may even flare-up your symptoms so do not be alarmed if that happens. Each test is designed to give us information about your condition so that we can best find the area and what to do with the pain through exercises.

Don’t forget to fill out the information on the worksheet!

7) Palpation

Palpation is basically touching the areas that pain could be coming from. In this section, we are looking to gather information as to which muscles and joints could be sore and tender and it provides a major clue as to what the problem could me. Follow the videos and see if you can re-create some of the pain that you are experiencing and then put the result into the worksheet! After this section, you can tally up your results so that you can move on to the treatment track!

8) Treatment Tracks

Now that you have finished your assessment and have your scores listed.

Choose the treatment track that you have scored the highest on. The treatment track will then have an explanation video as well as a treatment plan for you.

Follow the treatment plan that has been prescribed and to make it as easy as possible, do 15 repetitions for 2 sets for each exercise. You can mark the date on the top row and just place a checkmark on each day that you have completed the exercise!

9) Injury Prevention

Before we start all of the treatment plan let’s give you a couple tools to help you move around especially if you are in pain. This section will go through the basic motions of getting from a lying position all the way to a standing position, moving from standing to sitting, sitting to standing and also how to pick up objects off the floor and get into the car properly. We often take out backs for granted, but these methods are great for decreasing stress on the back and are great tips to carry on with even if you no longer have back pain!

10) Mobility Exercises

Here is the database of mobility exercises. Mobility is the ability to move freely and easily. If you do not have proper mobility it is hard to build strength on top of that challenge.

Imagine trying to move a door that’s on a rusty hinge. It creaks, it moves poorly, it feels like it is going to break and it just overall feels terrible. Sound familiar? Your joints are the same way, if they move poorly and just lack movement then we need to add some WD-40 to get it moving better. These exercises are your WD-40, so let’s get all those rusty joints moving smoothly again!

11) Stability Exercises

Here is the database of stability exercises. Stability is the ability to control movement. If you do not control movement properly then you run the risk of creating injuries due to lack of control as you look to build strength.

Using the same door hinge analogy, now that your door hinge is moving smoothly but what happens if the screws that hold the door hinge in place are loose? The door starts swinging wildly and there’s a lot more pressure and stress put on the hinge which could lead to damage to the hinge and door.

Your joints are the same, if they move properly but you can’t control how it moves then you have a higher chance of injuring yourself and also you will start to use the wrong muscles to perform the movement. These exercises will tighten that screw up to help with the increased movement. Let’s get your body stable and ready for building strength to prevent future low back problems!

12) Strength Exercises

Here is what everyone has been waiting for. The strength training portion of these exercises are for building strength to prevent future low back injuries from happening. We have had to hold off on these exercises until the later portions of your treatment plan so that you don’t hurt yourself during the recovery period. This is like the desert, you really shouldn’t eat it first and ruin the rest of your appetite.
