Acupuncture for Insomnia: A Natural Remedy

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early. While there are many medications available to treat insomnia, they often come with side effects and can be addictive. Acupuncture is a natural remedy that has been used for centuries to treat insomnia and other sleep disorders.

When diagnosing insomnia, there are some factors to consider. Is the problem related to sleep itself, or is it because of other physical conditions and symptoms. For example, we can have trouble sleeping if we are experiencing pain physically (musculoskeletal pain, body aches, etc) or pain internally (a headache, digestive issues, etc). Once we can find the cause, we can then

use various methods in acupuncture to fix the root problem.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Insomnia?

Acupuncture can treat insomnia by addressing the underlying imbalances in the body that are causing the sleep disorder. For example, if insomnia is caused by stress or anxiety, acupuncture may target acupoints that are associated with these emotions. By stimulating these points, acupuncture can help to calm the mind and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep. It also helps to regulate the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. This cycle is controlled by the body's internal clock, which is influenced by factors such as light exposure and hormone levels. Acupuncture may help to regulate these factors, promoting better sleep quality and duration.

”I have had acupuncture sessions with Kevin at both the Burnaby and Broadway locations. Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming during every visit. Kevin is very knowledgeable and I appreciate that he takes the time to always explain what he is doing in detail so I have a better understanding of the acupuncture treatment. They are personalized for my needs to help find solutions to alleviate pain, as well as make lifestyle changes through diet changes, techniques to reduce stress, as well as stretches to do at home. I truly feel taken care of at Baseline and always leave my appointments feeling very refreshed!”

What can I expect during my acupuncture visit?

During an acupuncture session for insomnia, a licensed acupuncturist will insert thin needles into specific points on the body. The needles are typically left in place for 20-25 minutes while the patient relaxes. Some patients may feel a slight tingling or dull ache at the site of the needle insertion, but most patients feel little to no discomfort.

Acupuncture is a natural and effective remedy for insomnia that can help to restore balance to the body and promote better sleep. While it may not work for everyone, it is generally considered safe and has few side effects. If you are struggling with insomnia, consider giving acupuncture a try. It may be just what you need to get a good night's sleep.

“I came in for my first ever acupuncture appointment with Wendy and she was so knowledgeable and kind, she definitely helped me to relax. I was having intense back pain when I came in, just before I was supposed to go to a festival. She used cupping and some acupuncture and fixed me right up! My back felt great within a day or two and I was able to go and enjoy dancing with my friends!”

Are there any side effects of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of treatment with very few side effects. Most patients find acupuncture treatments relaxing and experience minimal discomfort. Occasional side effects of acupuncture include soreness and possibly bruising where the needles were inserted. Single use, sterile, disposable are used to prevent any risk of infection.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are metallic and extremely fine (as thin as a hair) making them painless upon insertion. Each person's perception of pain is subjective and unique. Some patients may experience mild discomfort upon insertion of the acupuncture needle, however most individuals do not. Once the needles are inserted, one may experience a mild aching sensation or warmth around the needle site.

“I have been treated by Sharon who is an amazing Acupuncturist, she has the patient to understand my situation, she is extremely knowledgeable, and every time I see her I leave with no pain. I will keep on coming to see her for any treatment I need and I highly recommend her as a great Acupuncturist.”
